Riga romance!

Having heard about the future vision that it could soon become a new symbol of Riga, we took the journey. We jumped in the boat at the stop next to the Stockmann (for shopoholics, this is the biggest department store in town with great shopping opportunities and dining too).

The 102-year-old wooden boat Darling took us smoothly through the Riga canal out into to the Daugava River. On the way the captain and owner of the boat, Ainis Caunans, told us funny sailor stories and warned that sometimes a big angry catfish with the nickname Volleru Sams can make trouble for them and rock the boat in the middle of the river. There was no sign of him, however, and after passing the Port of Riga we floated back into the romantic city canal. In the near future the owners say they will provide their own Bluetooth audio-guide walking tours for those on deck.

The lovely one-hour journeys down Riga's canals can be joined at any stop – Stockmann, Spīķeri, Big Kristaps, Kronvalda Park or Bastion Hill. There are two boats in operation, both of which are 102 years old, Darling and the recently newly built Maria, and soon a third will be launched.

Even if you think you've seen everything in Riga, like we did, taking the boat will surprise you how different the angle of this particular view of the city looks. Ainis said that he really enjoys the rides in late evening when the lights of the city are all lit up.

Tours are available every day, from morning until late evening, and the owners are prepared to continue the rides until late autumn.
