The latest documentary by director Viesturs Kairišs „Lohengrin from VarkaKru”.

„Lohengrin from VarkaKru” is out on the screen at the cinema „K.Suns”; the film looks into the life of Latvian luger, Olympic bronze winner and DJ Martins Rubenis.

The film is a creative portrait of Martins Rubenis, an emotional story that, in an unsual way, brings the esthetics of sports to the big screen.

Mārtiņš Rubenis’ interests stretch beyond the borders of professional sports. Just like a Medieval knight, he seems to have arrived to fight a battle. A battle against time, his own ego and against the whole world at some moments. His luge and his DJ console are his armour; free thought, mind, power, game, sports, extremes, music and conscience are his weapons. The film’s plot draws parallels between Rubenis and the legend about Knight Lohengrin, who, together with other noble knights lived in a castle high up in the mountains and went out to fight against injustice or to help people in need.

The documentary features music from Wagner’s opera „Lohengrin”.

The film’s creative team underlines that the society has not always welcomed with ovation Martins Rubenis’ battles. People loved him after the athlete won the Olympic bronze medal and was named the Latvian athlete of the year, but when Rubenis called the society’s attention to the human rights violations in China and went on a hunger strike by the Embassy in China, he was met with incomprehension by the society and institutions.

Along with achievements in the professional sports, Rubenis has become a celebrity on Latvian alternative music scene, as DJ Betons and a member of the creative team „Varka Kru”.

At this year’s Latvian Film Awards „Lielais Kristaps” competition the documentary „Lohengrin from Varka Kru” was nominated for the best feature lenght documentary in 2009.

The film was created at the studio „Ego Media”.
