Temperatures will get even colder this weekend and at the beginning of next week.

On the night from Sunday to Monday, temperatures could even drop to minus 29 degrees Celsius in eastern regions of the country, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center informs, informs Leta.

Temperatures in most regions of the country will remain below minus 20 degrees Celsius next week.
The cold temperatures in Latvia will remain at least until the end of next week or the beginning of February.

Due to the cold temperatures, ice cover in inland waters are becoming thicker. Ice cover on the Daugava River from Riga to Jekabpils is 18 to 37 centimeters thick, and on the Lielupe River at Jelgava from 28 to 30 centimeters.
With the freezing temperatures, ice cover is becoming thicker in the Gulf of Riga and in coastal areas as well.
