In 2009, the number of employees working for the state administration in Latvia will be reduced by 5%, which will allow the state to save LVL 45 million, Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) said in an interview on the Latvian Radio 1 program ''Krustpunkti''.

The prime minister pointed out that staff reductions were already been included this year's budget amendments.
Ministries will have to adapt to this situation, but must retain work volume. Godmanis also indirectly mentioned that the number of ministries might also be reduced writes LETA.
Godmanis also informed that new priorities by ministries will not be supported next year. The only exception would be only if an old priority is liquidated and the new priority needs less financing.
Finance Minister Atis Slakteris (People's Party) has said that he would be ready to consider the merger of some ministries, which is dictated by the current budget situation.
