The fastest broadband Internet in Europe – and the second-fastest in the world – can be found in Latvia. This is the conclusion of research conducted this year by the US-based company Ookla, a global leader in broadband speed testing and web-based network diagnostic applications.
Only South Korea comes ahead of Latvia worldwide. There, the average download speed is a swift 34.14 megabits per second (Mbps), compared to a speed index of 24.29 Mbps in Latvia. The average speed around the world is just 7.67 Mbps. Even more surprisingly, poverty-stricken Moldova places third globally with 21.37 Mbps, ahead of Japan with 20.29 Mbps and Sweden at 19.78 Mbps. Lithuania also did well, coming third in the EU and 10th worldwide with a speed of 16.70 Mbps, while Estonia placed a relatively tardy 15th in the EU and 20th with 11.53 Mbps. The average download speed for the USA is even less impressive than Estonia, with 10.16 Mbps, putting it in 26th place worldwide. In last place among the 154 countries surveyed was Zambia, where the average download speed is a weeny 260 kilobits per second (Kbps). Well-connected Seoul, capital of South Korea, places top of the list of the fastest cities for downloading in the world, with 34.66 Mbps, followed by Riga with 27.90 Mbps and Hamburg with 26.87 Mbps. Results were obtained by analyzing test data between May 4, 2010 and June 2, 2010. Tests from 42,764,894 unique IPs were taken in this group, and of 215,254,281 total tests 8,156,839 were used for the current Index.
