Key buildings in central Riga face renovationBy Anatol Steven. 08.03.2012Riga Castle and Congress House to undergo major renovationThe Presidential Chancery is examining the possibility of a move from Riga Castle to the House of the Blackheads when major renovation gets underway in May.
A price-tag for the restoration work on the castle and its secluded gardens could be around LVL 20 million (€28.5 million). It is expected to last around two-and-a-half years.
However, a definite decision on a move to the House of the Blackheads, one of Old Riga’s most photographed sites, has not been made.
Meanwhile, the Congress House – a major cultural venue in central Riga for shows, concerts and art exhibitions – is expected to undergo major renovation in 2013. The result is likely to be a venue with the biggest multifunctional stage in Latvia.
Architect Juris Poga claims that the new 355 sq m stage will be perfect for events such as pop and rock concerts, symphony orchestras, opera and ballet productions, disco-themed events, movie screenings and fashion shows.
The auditorium will be expanded to capacity seating for 980 people, and there will be two balconies with a capacity of 365 and 282. The new-look building will be 25 meters higher.
