Latvia is one of ten "best ethical travel destinations in 2013"

Latvia is one of the ten best ethical destinations to travel to in 2013, according to, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that publishes a guide to the World’s Best Ethical Destinations each year.

Latvia, which made the list last year too, shares it with Barbados, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ghana, Lithuania, Mauritius, Palau, Samoa and Uruguay.

Each of these countries scored highly in three main areas: social welfare (measured by indicators such as child mortality rates, economic freedom and crime rates), environmental protection, and human rights, which includes press and political freedoms as well as gay rights.

The Latvian Institute reports that, according to the World Bank’s Gini Index, Latvia received the best equality ranking of this year’s “ethical destination” countries, with Lithuania following close behind. Latvia was also the highest ranked of this year’s countries according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2012, showing Latvia to be a leader in gender equality.

California, the world's 8th largest ecnoomy, has now also adopted a cap-and-trade carbon pricing policy. The program, which
is similar to the European model, will begin in 2012 with full implementation by 2015.
