Treasure hunters await arrival of Riga Flea MarketBy Andra Kunstberga. 06.08.2014Spīķeri quarter in Riga gets ready to host new marketDesign fans, treasure hunters and lovers of vintage oddities will all be welcome at the artsy Spīķeri quarter in Riga later this month for some fun alternative shopping. Visitors dropping by at Maskavas Street 10 between August 9 and September 6, from 11am and 5pm, will be able to find quirky clothing, housewares, old vinyl, cameras, handmade wool shoes, artisan jewelry and more. Admission to the market is free. From the 14th century, Spīķeri served as an area for the loading and unloading of cargo, hosting warehouses for goods that were traded in Riga. This trading spirit makes the area an atmospheric backdrop for the market. The event’s organizers – the Spīķeri quarter and vintage enthusiasts Retro Spectro – say they had the feeling that in summer Riga definitely needed a regular flea market, where anyone can bring along their unwanted but interesting things that had the potential to become real treasures for somebody else. |
