The night, when it is better to stay awake, approaches. Contemporary art forum "White Night" in Riga is set for the night of August 30, presenting contemporary theater, music, visual arts, films and other forms of art to the residents and guests of Riga.
This year “White Night” events take place at Andrejsala, Spīķeri complex, Riga Old Town, Vērmanes Park, Kronvalda Park and at the park by the National Opera, with participation of Latvian and foreign artists. Three special trams will effectuate the route from Andrejsala to Arkādijas Park, thematically arranged to represent three fundamental concepts, influencing human existence : God, Nature, Work. 2008 is the third time that the August festival of contemporary art is joined by the Latvian capital. It was begun by a cooperation of five cities—Paris, Brussels, Madrid, Rome and Rīga—and later joined in by Valletta, Montreal, Tokyo, Chicago, Santa Monica, Porto, Bucharest, Toronto and Miami Beach. In Rīga, the White Night takes place thanks to a coordinated effort by the Rīga City Council's Department of Culture, “Pareizā ķīmija” (“The Right Chemistry”) event organisers, the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, the Latvian National Theatre, the Latvian New Theatre Institute, Gallery NOASS, Radio Naba, Dirty Deal Café, the Art Garden gallery, Riga Art Space, the Centre for Arts Management and Information (MMIC), New Media Centre RIXC, Small Guild arts and culture centre, the Orbīta association of artists and poets, and Riga Porcelaine Museum.
