Along with its permanent exhibit tracing the development and history of photography in Latvia, the museum also has exhibits that change regularly, featuring local photographers, collections culled from the museum's archives or travelling exhibits of the work of foreign artists.

The Museum answers the need for the collection, preservation and exhibition of national photographic values. Its research is directed into the history of Latvian photography as an inseparable and unique component of Latvian ethnic culture and into its role as part of the overall evolution of photography in the world.
