Galerija Istaba – is not only a boutique to find funky one-of-a-kind paintings and accessories, but also a arts café upstairs, perfect for contemplating K.Barona street while drinking a cup of coffee.
Linda Lûse is a local Latvian artist and owner of this gallery/cafe. She has designed the layout and decorated it with all her own talent. It comes across as mellow, with none of the pretense you may feel at other cafes you may have ventured into. Istaba is on Kriðjâòa Barona iela, not a quiet street, but here you’re able to sit back and enjoy that tea or coffee while watching the trams and regular hustle and bustle go by.
If you have wanted to wear that old worn corduroy coat that your girlfriend doesn’t like, put it on and you won’t look out of place here. An original from floor to ceiling, Istaba is an expression in itself. Be sure to take note of the walls and lights, which have a rustic charm; they even kept the old switches.
The gallery is open from 12:00-20:00 and has various exhibitions that change monthly, however take note that it is closed on Sundays. The cafe upstairs is open until 24:00, to grab a small bite to eat; or just sit back with a drink and catch up with friends. The menu is simple in its offerings of soup, salad and other light lunch options.
This is also a great spot if you are after a one-of-a-kind gift, or just want something for yourself. You’ll find authentic Latvian souvenirs by Latvian artists, and with lots more on the way, be sure to keep your eyes open in here.
