Riga has a place dedicated to numismatics – Latvijas Monētu Nams (The Latvian Coin House) – for beginners and advanced coin collectors.
The history of coin collecting is as old as money itself. During the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, coins were collected by many European kings and princes.
Now Riga has a place dedicated to numismatics – Latvijas Monētu Nams (The Latvian Coin House) – for beginners and advanced coin collectors. This shop sells local and foreign special edition and jubilee coins, historical items from medieval times, even slivers of rough gold from the Californian gold rush. Our favorite item was “Icons of the Commonwealth”, a majestic set of gold coins from the only three remaining Commonwealth Royal Mints in Canada, Australia and Great Britain (€1,700). But the hits of the season are the commemorative coins marking the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The shop assistant told us that coin collectors often begin by saving coins they’ve come across by chance and found interesting. At the moment, their typical customers are locals interested in Latvian coins – usually one lat coins depicting different signs, images and events characterizing the country.
