A true one-of-a-kind place that must be seen to be believed. The theme here is the dark ages, and dark it is with hundreds of candles lighting the restaurant.
All the hired help are nicely dressed to fit the part and the food is of the time as well, but the plumbing is surely modern with an authentic twist.
Rozengrals is situated on the site of the city’s original foundations. Pride of place is the ancient well, dating back to 1293, which was one of five in Riga. The medieval restaurant boasts over two hundred places set within a twisting labyrinth of vaulted brick passageways. Indeed, one of the underground passageways leads to where the original sea port would have been, when it was used to transport barrels of wine into the city.
Everything from part of the original city walls (1201), to the old treated wooden floors, candlelit rooms and centuries-old menu smacks of the Riga of yesteryear.
