The new pasta and wine bar Mikelandželo was opened quietly recently without noise or pomposity.
Located on the edge of the Old Town facing the Daugava River, this tiny but charming venue offers a long list of wines as well as a tour through the world of traditional Italian culinary treats, which we judged to be of an excellent standard. The manager, Roberts Stankevics, explained that he had been working with the restaurant owner in the field of real estate, but as that market proceeded through its phase of silence and stagnation, and they themselves were tired of eating lunch at the same places in the neighborhood, the idea of a cozy Italian dining spot was born. The chef, who previously worked in another Italian restaurant named Paparazzi for several years, brings his knowledge and artistic touch to Mikelandželo, but not only in mixing the ingredients. He created the interior design too. The menu mainly focuses on light treats like salads, brochettes and snacks, and a couple of options for meat lovers, but unfortunately nothing for lovers of fish. However, there are pasta dishes on the menu too and you can opt for bucatini, linguini, tagliatelle or spaghetti and then choose which sauce you’d prefer, starting from the classic Bolognese (5 euros) to wild mushrooms with truffle cream sauce (7.80 euros). The menu recommends which wines would go smoothly with the dish. Talking about the wine, what’s on offer is fairly broad, focusing on bit on Italy but also on the new as well as the old world.
