Trentini
We don’t often write about design in the shopping pages of RigaNOW!, and this should change, as the Latvian capital boasts a number of intriguing independent stores selling the best of Latvian, Scandinavian and international design.
Trentini is a bit out of the way, located towards the southern end of Lāčplēša Street before the railroad bridge, in what used to be a glass factory built in 1911. The tall chimney still towers over the functional but not unattractive brick building. But Trentini is worth the journey. Large windows illuminate the post-industrial space, with the light playing over installations that include mock-up lounges, classy kitchens, bright and modern bathrooms, selections of lighting, endearingly shaped knickknacks, and a wide variety of fantastically futuristic furniture. Trentini has been promoting “esthetic and qualitative arrangements” for interiors here since 2009, offering some of the world’s most prestigious and valuable furniture, lighting, decorative materials and other interior objects produced by well-known manufacturers. Design and architecture gourmands with high standards will find plenty of eye candy here among the tub chairs and textured fabrics to create a feel-good environment for living and working in. A Ligne Roset mono-store stands at the core of the gallery. Known for its artful collaborations with both established and up-and-coming talents in contemporary design, the aim of this French company is to offer consumers a whole lifestyle via its furniture collections and complimentary decorative accessories, lighting, rugs, textiles and other occasional items. A distinguishing point that sets Ligne Roset apart from other manufacturers is its 150-year-old tradition of investing in designer collaborations. Matching what it calls a deeply held belief in design with investment and technical innovation, it has grown from a small business to a multinational company with factories in France, headquarters in Briord and more than 200 exclusive Ligne Roset stores and 1,000 retail distributors worldwide. It’s still a family-run business, however. Creativity is a key value of the Ligne Roset brand. If a new product demands new materials or productions methods, the company will simply acquire them. Whether it’s seating, pieces of furniture, lighting, textiles, rugs or bed linen – the idea precedes and the technique follows. Toga sofas, deep-set “Ottoman” armchairs, a Cineline dining table in ebony-stained oak or gloss white lacquer, exclusive-looking upholstery, lots of warm colors, lamps that resemble milk jugs, super-modern storage furniture… OK, so you may not be able to comfortably take everything home on the plane, but now you’ve got the ideas you can find out the location of the nearest Ligne Roset store to your own hometown.
