By day it’s perfect for creative meetings, by night for hanging with your beardy-weirdy buddies. Soccer, beards, craft beers, steak, motorbikes, vests, tattoos, gin… OK, maybe some of these are the domains of girls too, but Vest (in Latvian it means to lead, go, carry, guide, take) takes particular pride in them.

Literally hammered out of a derelict wooden building close to where Stabu Street meets busy Kr.Valdemāra, its wood-block and metallic grey interior has the feel of an office of postmodern architects, or a workshop run by radical young artisans.

We dropped in for espresso and cake, which was maybe a bit girly but tasted superb. Greeted by vintage motorbikes at the door, we endured what seemed the entire back catalogue of Red Hot Chili Peppers before the music got a bit more adventurous with some Swedish psych rock.

By day at least, it’s the perfect free-wifi environment for creative meetings. By night it’s good for hanging out with your ultra-trendy beardy-weirdy buddies, if you have any. No DJs – maybe also too girly – but it’s basically a straight-up manly bar, with a few trendy ladies thrown in.

We liked the sink and glasses in front of the bar where you can help yourself to water. The food is kinda the “tell me what you want and we’ll make it” approach, but serves old-school favorites like all-day breakfasts, burgers and jacket potatoes (hard on the outside, mushy within).
