Nestled in the city’s embassy district, this is the new go-to locale for self-styled sophisticates. Nestled in the city’s embassy district, this is the new go-to locale for self-styled sophisticates. Tall windows and high ceilings give plenty of space and light to shine onto sparkling broad-rimmed wine glasses and gleaming cutlery.

At 4pm the tablecloths come out to cover the sturdy wooden tables, straining the elegance still further. Step across the polished oak-wood flooring and there’s a sumptuous living room at the rear end, for private business conversations or personal romantic meetings between young ladies and much older men.

Impress by dining on grain-fed rib-eye at €11 per 100 grams, braised shank of locally reared lamb, or, as a starter, dill-marinated salmon with potato terrine, sour cream and chives. Nothing surprising about the menu, which is of course the point. These are classic dishes prepared in the classic style by head chef Alexander Malakhov and his team.

Doing lunch with friends? Go for the antipasti, as we did, such as the agreeably served cheese or charcuterie boards (€5 each) with long slices of fresh vegetables (€3) and grissini (breadsticks, humus and goat-cheese mousse; €3). With a couple of glasses of Super Tuscan, it really doesn’t matter if you’ve eaten it 20 times before.
