Magazine "Musical America" names Elīna Garanča Vocalist of the Year

The classical music magazine "Musical America" of the United States has named Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča Vocalist of the Year.

The American audience will have an opportunity to hear the talented singer, who is already well-known in Europe, performing the title role in a production of George Bizet's "Carmen" a the New York Metropolitan Opera next year. January 16 show of "Carmen" with participation of Garanča will be transmitted live in cinemas all around the world, including Latvia, informs

"Musical America" awarded conductor Riccardo Muti the "Musician of the Year" award; Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, 70, got the "Composer of the Year" award; the "Instrumentalist of the Year" award went to the American violinist Joshua Bell and Warren Jones got the "Collaborative Pianist of the Year" award.

"Musical America" awards classical music prizes annually since 1960, when one of its first awards went to Leonard Bernstein. The magazine "Musical America" was established in 1898 and is one of the most influential press editions in its field.
