Less and Less Smokers Every Year

By Editor. 04.01.2010

The number of smokers in Latvia is reducing year by year.

According to the report published by the Center of Health Economics, 51 percent of men and 19 percent of women admitted smoking daily back in 1998, but in 2008 the numbers dropped to 45 and 16 percent respectively. The number of persons subjected to passive smoking at their workplace has reduced over the last decade. But unfortunately, the number of young smokers has increased: 38 percent of girls and 46 percent of boys in 7th to 9th grade admit smoking daily, informs LETA.

Over the last few years the popularity of various alternatives to the classical tobacco products has been growing: people use hookah, snuff and chewing-tobacco more often.
