Latvia ready to share experience with Ireland

By Anatol Steven. 30.11.2010

Valuable economic stabilisation experience on offer, foreign minister says

In a personal meeting between Latvia’s recently appointed foreign minister, Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis, and the Republic of Ireland’s Ambassador to Latvia, Aidan Kirwan, an offer of assistance and economic know-how during troubled times was made. This time, the offer came from Latvia.
In the meeting, held on 25 November, Foreign Minister Kristovskis told the ambassador about Latvia's efforts toward economic stabilisation.
He said he had a keen interest in the current developments in the Irish economy and measures for reducing the budget deficit.
Kristovskis stressed that disregarding different conditions, Latvia would be ready to share its experience with Ireland in negotiating with international lenders.
Ireland is still finalizing the details of its emergency loan package from the IMF and the EU, agreed broadly at the weekend, and this is something Latvia has experience of.
The foreign minister pointed to the links between both countries fostered by intensive contacts between residents of Ireland and Latvia as well as by the Latvian community in Ireland. Both sides agreed that, given these factors, cultural cooperation should be intensified and economic cooperation sustained and broadened.
