airBaltic to launch new summertime route

Latvian airline announces new route between Riga and Palma de Mallorca

The Latvian airline airBaltic announced this week that it would launch a new route between Riga and Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on June 1.

The carrier said that the route would offer convenient connections between the two cities and beyond to destinations in the Baltics, Scandinavia, Russia and the CIS.

Last summer, airBaltic launched summer-season routes to Mediterranean destinations such as Rijeka in Croatia and Olbia on the island of Sardinia. These proved popular. But the airline has confirmed that last year’s summer route to Lake Balaton in Hungary would not be on offer in summer 2014.

“Our customer is in focus when deciding new routes for the summer and adjusting existing routes to best meet the demand,” Martin Gauss, airBaltic's chief executive officer, said. “Our customers appreciate warm-weather holidays on the Mediterranean, as we have seen [in the] strong interest in our offering a year ago.

He continued: “For the upcoming summer season we will discontinue our Riga-Heviz Balaton route, recording somewhat weaker demand; this move makes aircraft capacity available for the Riga-Palma de Mallorca service for our customers travelling between the two cities and onwards to destinations such as St Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, Vilnius, Tallinn.”
