The Church of St. George, built in 1204, is the oldest stone building in Riga. Gutted and turned into a warehouse during the 16th century reformation, it now houses exhibits of Latvian applied arts and professional design, dating as far back as the end of the 1800s.

The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design was established on 1 January 1989 and has been open to the public since 6 July 1989. The museum features a wide range of exhibitions by modern local and foreign artists.
