The most visited museum in Riga is dedicated to documenting the oppression of the Latvian people by the Nazi and Soviet regimes. The most visited museum in Riga is dedicated to documenting the oppression of the Latvian people by the Nazi and Soviet regimes.

It gives a unique opportunity to see inside a gulag barracks and witness the unbearable conditions suffered by thousands at the hands of the Soviets.

The museum has been at the center of ongoing public debate in recent years. The building that until recently housed the museum is considered by some to be an eyesore against the beauty of the Old Town but by others to be a unique and important testament of the Soviet occupation.

It is currently under restoration and the museum has been moved to the former US Embassy building at Raina bulv. 7, just outside the Old Town.
