Karosta as an independent town environment that grew at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It was constructed as a naval base for the Russian Tsar Alexander III and later was used as a military base for the Soviet Baltic Navy. When the Russian army left Latvia in 1994, Karosta became largely uninhabited. Now it is a funky place for brave tourists and artists, since there are unique sights and fascinating places, such as the picturesque seascapes with almost blasted fortresses or abandoned storehouses.

Nature, buildings, ruins, people all come together creating this unique feeling. Karosta's military prison has now been converted into a hostel (open May - September) and it is possible to spend the night there as a prisoner would have. Located at www.karostascietums.lv
