For a small country, the zoo has a surprisingly rich array of mammals, reptiles, birds and other animals. The almost 20 hectares of property occupied by Riga Zoo is dotted with beautiful pines and bordered by the lake Ķīšezers. But that’s not why people visit.
The zoo was established in 1912, making it the oldest in Northern Europe. In recent years it has been gradually updated, while aiming to educate the public and protect the environment. This is evident by admiring the giraffes and their new home which were added to the menagerie only last year. The tropical house is also fairly recent, and quite impressively modern. It’s difficult to resist the marmosets in there, miniscule monkeys with unbelievably tiny features leaping around at lightening speed.
